The Procedure

Knee replacement surgery is recommended for patients whose knee joints have been damaged by trauma and for those who suffer from debilitating osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis or other rare autoimmune disease involving the joint. Patients who experience constant knee pain or difficulty walking may benefit from knee replacement surgery to help restore function and improve mobility. Knee replacement surgery, also referred to as knee arthroplasty, is a procedure in which damaged bone and cartilage in the knee are replaced by an artificial joint. Physical therapy is recommended to help aid in a successful knee replacement recovery.

Types of Knee Surgery

Our expert orthopedic physicians specialize in varying degrees of joint replacement procedures, including partial and total knee replacement surgery. The type of knee replacement recommended for patients is determined by the level of damage to the knee joint resulting in progressively growing pain and stiffness and impaired daily function. Schedule an appointment with one of our Orthopedic Nurse Navigators to learn which option is right for you.

  • Total Knee Replacement Surgery is considered for patients who suffer from destruction of the full knee joint and have very limited mobility. This procedure involves replacing all components of the knee that make up the hinge joint including a portion of the femur bone, the top end of the lower leg bone, the kneecap and posterior cruciate ligament. Patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery can expect a greater lifetime for the artificial implant and improved joint functionality.
  • Partial Knee Replacement Surgery is recommended for patients who have limited or minor arthritis in one area of the knee and still have good range of motion. This procedure involves replacing only the damaged part of the knee joint including either the medial (inside) or lateral (outside) and retains most of the knee tissue. Partial knee replacement is a minimally invasive procedure, allowing patients to experience reduced pain, faster recovery time and quicker return to normal activities.
  • Knee Replacement Revisions are a second surgery involving a partial or complete exchange of the original knee implant. As total knee replacement is determined to be one of the most successful procedures in providing patients pain relief and improved function, a knee replacement may fail and require repair or replacement. This is more prominent in patients who live a more active lifestyle but experience bone fractures, stiffness or instability of the joint, pain caused by wear and tear of the artificial implant or an infection that has developed in the surrounding tissue. Patients who have undergone revision surgery experience favorable long-term outcomes, including pain relief, improved stability, and restored mobility.
