Blessed and Highly Favored: Understanding the African American Grieving Journey

This seminar will focus on helping interdisciplinary professionals understand the unique experiences and resources of African Americans going through death and loss including aspects of trauma, culture and multiple forms of loss.  In addition, we will explore the significant contribution of faith and faith communities to the African American coping experience.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Mildred Williams is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Masters in Counseling Psychology Program at Southern Wesleyan University in Upstate, South Carolina.  Over 34 years, she has extensive clinical experience in individual, group, and family counseling, grief and loss, psychological disorders, substance dependency, and spiritual life coaching.  With a foundation at Rutgers University, Dr. Williams completed two Master’s degrees from Webster University~ one in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and one in Human Resources Development – and a Ph.D. in Leadership at Carolina University in Winston-Salem.

Certified in Mental Health First Aid and in QPR-Suicide Prevention, she is also a trainer of trainers in Trauma-Informed Suicide Prevention as well as for Black Faith Leaders on the issues of mental health and suicide in the Black church.  A first responder for identifying victims of sexual abuse, Dr. Williams stays close to those struggling with HIV, addictions, mental illness, and human sex trafficking through her work with the Greenville homeless population.  Married for 28 years to the Rev. Dr. Roy Williams, she actively serves with her husband in their church’s Mind, Body, and Spirit Ministry and is a proud parent of 26-year-old twins, Kira and Khalil.
