College Student Volunteers

Northeast Georgia Health System offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for college students. Whether you are interested in pursuing a volunteer experience toward a healthcare career or just want to be more involved in your community it is a great opportunity.

College volunteers make a tremendous difference in the patient experience by performing non-medical duties in the clinical areas, and non-clinical areas that also directly impact the patient experience.  Volunteers are appreciated by staff and gain hands-on experience.

Where Do College Students Volunteer?

We believe that the most successful volunteers are those who are matched with opportunities that best align with their interests and skills. The NGHS Auxiliary team will work with you throughout the onboarding process to help you find a rewarding volunteer placement. Common areas of service for college volunteers include the following:

  • Greeter/Escort
  • Patient Friend Emergency Services
  • Patient Friend Nursing Units, ex. medical, surgical, inpatient, and outpatient physical rehab, pediatrics, cardiac rehab, and PeriOp
  • Art Cart
  • Meal Delivery
  • Materials Management
  • Sterile Processing
  • Medical Research
  • Linen Department
  • The Window Shops

Frequently Asked Questions

Does being Dual Enrolled in a college qualify me to apply as a college student?

If you are a high school student and dual enrolled in a college, you are required to apply as a teen volunteer.

Does Volunteer Services track my hours?

Yes, Volunteer Services uses the volunteer management software Volgistics to track volunteer service hours. Volunteers are responsible for signing in and out for each shift to record service hours.

Do you provide references for academic programs or job applications?

Yes, Volunteer Services staff members are glad to provide references. Staff have the discretion to provide a letter of recommendation or a statement verifying the total service hour contribution.

Can I serve in more than one area?

NGHS volunteers may serve in more than one area; however, the majority of college and adult volunteers prefer serving in one or two areas on a consistent basis.

How Do I Apply?

Please know that the onboarding process with NGHS is extensive. To allow enough time for processing we strongly recommend that college students apply two to three months before the semester they wish to begin volunteering.

To begin the application process, visit nghs.com/volunteer, fully review the volunteer handbook, and complete the application and required background check.
