Georgia State Health Benefit Plan Now Covers Bariatric Surgery and Obesity Medicine

The Georgia State Health Benefit Plan covers bariatric weight-loss surgery. This means that any person insured through the plan has weight-loss surgery as a covered benefit – something that was previously uncovered and required out-of-pocket payment. Beginning in 2023, the State Health Benefit Plan also began covering obesity medicine in addition to weight-loss surgery. Learn more about your nonsurgical weight-loss options at NGMC. 

In 2022 and 2023, our surgeons performed 158 weight-loss surgeries on patients covered by the Georgia State Health Benefit Plan.

The Bariatric Weight Loss Center at NGMC offers a variety of aftercare support options for patients – including behavioral and nutritional counseling, yoga and weight-lifting classes, a free clothing closet and more.
