Georgia Heart Institute welcomes electrophysiologist Greg Altemose, MD

Published: Monday, December 16, 2024

People in Northeast Georgia seeking expert care for heart rhythm disorders now have another choice. Greg Altemose, MD, a highly experienced cardiology electrophysiologist with more than 30 years in medicine, recently joined Georgia Heart Institute to see patients in Gainesville.

As an electrophysiologist, Dr. Altemose specializes in treating conditions such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia, reducing the risk of stroke via minimally invasive left atrial appendage closure, and providing cardiac rhythm device therapies, such as pacemakers and heart monitors. While technology is an important part of his practice, Dr. Altemose still believes the human element is the key to being a good doctor.

“I believe the most rewarding aspects of my career are the relationships that I build with my patients,” said Dr. Altemose. “I believe it is both a privilege and an honor to help folks who trust me to take care of them. I treat patients as I would treat members of my own family, and I always use the most up-to-date evidence and the art of medicine while constantly weighing risks versus benefits.”

Dr. Altemose grew up near Philadelphia, Pa., then graduated from medical school and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at Temple University. He completed another fellowship in Cardiology/Electrophysiology at Indiana University’s Krannert Institute of Cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society.

His career has taken him all over the country, including Arizona (where he spent eight years with the Mayo Clinic), Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas. He most recently practiced just across the state line at Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken, S.C. Dr. Altemose is married with three sons.
