March is Lymphedema Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of this condition and how it impacts patients. Our lymphatic system plays a crucial role in regulating fluid levels in our bodies and filtering out harmful organisms. When this system becomes damaged or ineffective, it can lead to swelling known as lymphedema.

What is lymphedema? Causes and risk factors

Lymphedema occurs when lymphatic fluid accumulates due to a compromised lymphatic system. In the United States, the most common cause of lymphedema is related to oncology treatment—specifically, axillary node dissection following a breast cancer diagnosis. Radiation therapy, lymph node removal and certain chemotherapy treatments can increase the risk of developing lymphedema.

Anyone who has undergone lymph node removal or received radiation to the lymph nodes is considered to be in stage 0 or “latent” lymphedema. This means that while swelling may not yet be visible, the lymphatic system is already compromised and less effective. Although breast cancer-related lymphedema is the most common, lymphedema can also develop in other areas of the body, including the head, neck, legs and trunk, both during and after oncology treatment.

Lymphedema treatment and management options

Currently, there is no cure for lymphedema, but medical advancements continue to improve management strategies. Both surgical options and early intervention techniques are helping patients live more comfortably with the condition.

Key strategies for managing lymphedema:

  • Physical therapy & speech therapy – Early screening, symptom monitoring and patient education for independent management
  • Compression therapy – Specialized garments and bandages to help control swelling
  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) – A gentle massage technique to encourage lymph flow
  • Exercise & movement – Specific exercises to stimulate lymphatic drainage and improve function
