As we celebrate Health Literacy Month in October, it’s important to remember how all libraries, including public and medical libraries, are essential partners in community-based health literacy efforts. In 2009, The Fraser Resource Center opened its doors to the public in the North Patient Tower on the NGHS Gainesville campus. The donors, Grady and Lillian Fraser, wished to create a destination of knowledge for the community and to remain anonymous until their passing. Our President, Carol Burrell, said it best when she stated, “The Fraser’s were strong in their faith, humble and unassuming. With servants’ hearts, they experienced no greater joy than sharing with others the same abundant blessings of love and kindness bestowed upon them. We are grateful for the Frasers’ generosity and the very special legacy it created.”
The Fraser Resource Center is a health sciences library open to the public and staffed by two full-time medical librarians. The librarians are trained to help people research diagnoses and find answers to their healthcare-related questions. The center also gives physicians, providers and staff access to essential data and research.
The Fraser Resource Center and Endowment exemplify the humble couple’s sincere desire to make a difference in the lives of others and give back to their beloved community. Lillian, especially, had a genuine passion for knowledge that led to the establishment of this learning destination designed to give educational opportunities to those who might not otherwise have the resources available.
“Mahatma Gandhi once said, “love requires that true education should be easily accessible to all and should be of use to every villager in his daily life,” It is without a doubt that the late Grady and Lillian Fraser embrace this way of thinking.

The informational needs of patients, their families, healthcare professionals and our community will be served for generations to come thanks to the Fraser’s generosity.
