How much does hernia repair surgery cost?

Those suffering from a hernia may have many questions on their mind, from recovery time to finding the right surgeon, but the cost of surgery is likely a concern too. Unfortunately, there isn’t always a hard and fast answer. The cost to repair a hernia depends on your insurance coverage and the complexity of the procedure that you need.

Finding a specific cost for your hernia repair

Most commercial insurers and Medicare cover hernia surgery. Generally, you will pay a percentage of care after your deductible is met. Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) accepts most major health insurance plans.

If you want to get a specific cost for your surgery, please contact our Center of Excellence coordinator at 770-219-4040. Our coordinator will connect you with the schedulers at either Northeast Georgia Physicians Group or Longstreet Clinic and their team can help confirm the cost of surgery based on your insurance.

How do I know if hernia surgery is necessary at all?

Unfortunately, the only treatment for a hernia is surgery. Hernias are caused by tears in a muscle wall, and those tears will not repair themselves. In most cases, a small delay in treating a minor hernia won’t cause problems, but leaving a hernia untreated over a long period of time can cause complications.

Those complications can include worsening of symptoms, including increased pain or bulging, and even lead to “strangulation.” This happens when the organ bulging from the muscle wall loses circulation, which can cause a bowel obstruction. Strangulated hernias and bowel obstructions require emergency attention.
